Stepping into Akko Old City (Acre) is like walking through a living time capsule. As a private tour guide in Israel, I often tell my guests that while Jerusalem is the spirit of the country, Akko is its pulse, raw, authentic, and layered with thousands of years of drama. From the massive underground Crusader Halls to the salty breeze of the Old Akko Port, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a must-visit!
Why Akko Old City is a Top Israel Attraction
Akko is unique because it is a "double city." Above ground, you experience the vibrant, narrow alleys and domes of the Ottoman Empire. Below ground, you find a perfectly preserved medieval world built by the Knights Hospitaller. Whether you are interested in biblical history, Crusader archeology, or world-class Middle Eastern cuisine, Akko delivers an unforgettable experience.
The Knights’ Kingdom: Exploring the Crusader Halls
The highlight of any visit is the Knights’ Kingdom (Crusader City). Walking through these massive stone refectories and secret tunnels, you can almost hear the clinking of armor.
The Templars’ Tunnel: Don’t miss this 150-meter underground passage that connected the Templar fortress to the port.
The Hospitaller Fortress: A masterpiece of Gothic architecture that remained buried under sand for centuries.
A Sensory Journey through the Akko Market (Shuk)
The vibrant Ottoman markets of Akko are a feast for the senses. Unlike more commercialized markets, the Akko Shuk remains a place where locals buy fresh fish, hand-ground spices, and the famous Hummus Said, widely considered some of the best hummus in Israel.
Walking the Ancient Sea Walls
For the best views of the Mediterranean, head to the Akko Sea Walls. Built to defend the city from invaders like Napoleon (who famously failed to conquer Akko), these walls now offer a romantic walkway overlooking the turquoise water and the Haifa skyline in the distance.
The Crusader Hospitaller & Meeting the Last Coppersmith
One of my favorite moments on an Akko tour is the contrast between the "Grand" and the "Granular." After we walk through the echoing, massive stone vaults of the Hospitaller Fortress, where the knights once dined and planned their defenses, we emerge back into the sunlight of the market.
Just a few minutes from those 800-year-old halls, I love to take my guests to visit the last traditional coppersmith in Akko. Standing in his small, soot-stained workshop, you see him hammering away at copper plates just as his ancestors did centuries ago. It’s a powerful bridge between the Crusader past and the living Ottoman present. Hearing the rhythmic clink-clink-clink of his hammer reminds us that while the knights are gone, the spirit of craftsmanship in this city hasn't skipped a beat.
