If you are looking for the "Ornament of the Galilee," look no further than Zippori National Park (Sepphoris). Known for its world-class ancient mosaics and deep spiritual history, Zippori is the best getaway for anyone exploring the rich heritage of Northern Israel. From the seat of the Sanhedrin to Roman villas, this site is a masterpiece of archaeology.

The Story of Zippori: Where the Mishnah was Born

The name Zippori comes from the Hebrew word Tzippor (Bird), because the city sits perched on a hill like a bird. During the 2nd century CE, Zippori became the spiritual and political center of the Jewish world. It was here that Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi redacted the Mishnah, the first written collection of Jewish oral traditions, changing the course of Jewish history forever.

But Zippori wasn't just a Jewish center; it was a cosmopolitan Roman city where Jews, Christians, and Pagans lived side-by-side in relative peace. This cultural "melting pot" resulted in the most spectacular floor art found anywhere in the Middle East, including the world-famous Mona Lisa of the Galilee.

Top 10 Things to Do in Zippori National Park

1. Meet the "Mona Lisa of the Galilee" Located in the Dionysus House, this breathtaking mosaic depicts a woman whose eyes seem to follow you from every angle.

  • Highlight: Her lifelike expression and the use of over 1.5 million tiny stones make this the most famous ancient mosaic in Israel.

2. Explore the Nile House This massive building features a vibrant mosaic floor depicting the celebrations of the Nile River’s flooding.

  • What to look for: The detailed scenes of hunting, animals, and the "Nilometer" used to measure the water levels.

9. Discover the Orpheus House Another beautiful villa featuring a mosaic of Orpheus, the legendary Greek musician, charming animals with his lyre.

10. View the "Galilee Man" Mosaic While the Mona Lisa gets the fame, the nearby depiction of a bearded man (possibly a philosopher) is equally intricate and well-preserved.
