If you are looking for a place where lush green "jungles," rushing ice-cold streams, and 3,000-year-old biblical secrets meet, then Tel Dan Nature Reserve is your ultimate destination. Located at the foot of Mount Hermon in the northern Galilee, Tel Dan isn't just a hike; it’s an immersive journey through nature and time.

Why Tel Dan is the Ultimate Northern Israel Experience

Tel Dan is home to the Dan River, the largest and most important of the three sources of the Jordan River. Because the water comes from the melting snow of Mount Hermon, it stays a refreshing 14.5°C (58°F) all year round. For families traveling in the Israeli heat, this "water paradise" is the perfect escape.

1. The Lush "Jungle" Trails

The reserve offers several well-marked paths, including an accessible circular trail perfect for strollers. As you walk, you are surrounded by a dense canopy of Syrian Ash and Laurel trees, making you feel like you’ve stepped out of the Middle East and into a tropical rainforest. The sound of rushing water is your constant companion.

2. The Wading Pool: A Kid’s Dream

While most of the river is protected to preserve the ecosystem, the reserve has created a dedicated wading pool. It is shallow, safe, and crystal clear—the perfect spot for kids to splash around while parents enjoy the shade of the ancient trees.

3. Walking Through the Bible: The Abraham Gate

Tel Dan is a heavy-hitter for history buffs. It houses the ruins of the biblical city of Laish (Dan).

  • The Abraham Gate: This incredibly rare, intact mud-brick arch dates back to the Middle Bronze Age (approx. 18th century BCE). It is called the Abraham Gate because, according to Genesis, Abraham traveled here to rescue his nephew Lot.

  • The "House of David" Inscription: This is where archaeologists found the famous Tel Dan Stele, the first historical evidence outside the Bible mentioning the "House of David."

Tel Dan: A Perspective of the North

Tel Dan offers a perspective of the Galilee that you simply can't find elsewhere, where rushing Jordan River headwaters and ancient biblical fortifications meet sweeping vistas of the lush Hula Valley.
