Imagine standing in the center of a bustling city, surrounded by high-rises and traffic, only to step through a gate and find yourself in the serene silence of the wild. Gazelle Valley (Emek Hatzva'im) is Israel’s largest urban nature reserve, a 64-acre oasis where wild mountain gazelles roam free, just minutes from Jerusalem’s busiest intersections.

For travelers seeking a break from the intense history of the Old City, Gazelle Valley offers a refreshing encounter with Israel’s natural beauty and its groundbreaking success in urban conservation.

The Vision That Saved the Valley: History & Importance Today

The story of Gazelle Valley is a legendary tale of "People Power" and environmental resilience. Originally a series of lush fruit orchards, the valley became an island in the 1990s when the construction of major highways and the "Begin Road" cut it off from the Judean Hills. This trapped a small herd of mountain gazelles inside, leaving them vulnerable to traffic and urban predators.

For over a decade, real estate developers fought to turn this prime land into luxury high-rise apartments. However, the citizens of Jerusalem, families, activists, and the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI), fought back in a landmark legal battle. They didn't just want a park; they wanted a sanctuary.

Why it matters today: Winning that battle transformed Gazelle Valley into a global model for urban conservation. Today, it serves as:

  • A Breeding Haven: It is a "nucleus" for the endangered Mountain Gazelle, where they can breed safely before being reintroduced to the wild.

  • A Community Hub: For Jerusalem citizens, it is a free "backyard" where they can connect with nature without leaving the city.

  • Family Education: For families, it offers an outdoor classroom where children learn about biodiversity, water recycling, and the importance of protecting our local wildlife.

5 Places of Interest at Gazelle Valley

1. The Observation Huts

Strategically placed throughout the park, these wooden "blinds" allow you to watch the gazelles and birds without being seen.

  • What to look for: This is the best spot for photography. If you sit quietly, the gazelles often graze just a few feet away.

2. The Main Lake and Water System

The park features a series of four ponds fed by a sophisticated rainwater collection system that filters urban runoff into crystal-clear pools.

  • Highlight: Look for the vibrant Kingfisher or the Ferruginous duck diving for a snack among the water lilies.

3. The Greek Tortoise Shelter

This area serves as a rehabilitation center for tortoises that were illegally kept as pets and cannot survive in the open wild.

  • The Experience: It’s a wonderful spot for kids to see these slow-moving creatures up close while learning about wildlife protection.

4. The Natural Amphitheater and Picnic Lawns

Near the entrance, the park opens into lush, shaded lawns designed for relaxation.

  • Pro Tip: There are no trash bins inside to protect the animals. You must "pack it in, pack it out," helping keep the valley pristine.

5. The Perimeter "Wild" Trails

The trails allow you to hike through vegetation typical of the Jerusalem Hills—scented with wild herbs like za'atar and sage.

  • What to do: Borrow binoculars from the visitor center to spot young fawns hiding in the tall grass during the spring.
